Fireplaces Frequently Asked Questions
I have a crack on my fireplace refractory panel. Is this a problem?
It depends on the severity of the crack. It is in your best interest to call and set up an appointment for a service technician to come out and check. If the crack is severe enough we can order a replacement refractory and install it for you.
My gas logs are turning black with soot. Why is this happening and what should I do?
It is normal for vented gas log sets to accumulate soot, this adds to the realism of the log set and will not damage them. It is not normal on vent-free sets though and should be inspected by a service technician to ensure it is workingproperly.
When does my gas log set and burner need to be cleaned or serviced?
Setting up an annual service plan with Busch Fireplace’s Service Department is recommended. The service technicians would go out twice a year, usually before and after winter, to clean and maintain your gas log set. This will help preventfuture problems.
My remote control for my gas log set isn’t working. What’s wrong with it?
Usually the first problem with gas log remotes is battery life. Other times the settings on the remote receivers are adjusted by children or by accident. If there is ever a problem, calling the service department and setting up anappointment for the service technicians to check it out, will always get your problem fixed.
I smell gas or an unusual smell coming from my fireplace. What should I do?
Immediately turn off the gas to the fireplace, exit the room, and contact the service technicians at Busch Fireplaces.
What is the purpose of my fireplace screen?

Would closing my damper on my fireplace allow me to get more heat from my vented gas log set?
It is never safe to close your damper when your vented gas log set is burning.
Can I use natural/propane gas in a wood burning fireplace?
Yes. A wood burning fireplace is fire rated to be able to handle a gas flame as well as a roaring real wood fire.
Can I put decorative items in front of my fireplace?
It depends on what the items are composed of. If it is made of a cloth-like, plastic or combustible material then it cannot be in front of your fireplace when lit, but it can when the fireplace is not in use. If it is composed of a high temperature metal, stone, brick or any non-combustible material then it is safe to place in front of a burning fireplace. Be careful of the temperature of these objects when burning your gas logs. They will normally be hot to the touchdepending on the duration of the burn.
Can I burn real wood with my gas log?
No. The heat of a wood fire can and will damage your logs, burners, grates and valves, and will also void your warranty.
Can I install a vent-free gas log set in my vented fireplace?
Yes. It is safe to install a vent-free gas log set into a vented fireplace. Closing the damper allows the same effect as a vent-free fireplace.
How do I clean my gas logs?
Lightly brushing off soot with a soft bristled brush works, or calling the service department of Busch Fireplaces and setting up an appointment for our service crew to go out and service your gas log set. We can also set up an annual service plan, in which we will remind you when it’s time to do maintenance.
How do I light my pilot light for my burner?
This depends on if you have a manual or a millivolt set and the brand of log. Usually to light your pilot light it requires you turning the pilot control knob to the “pilot” position and pressing the knob. This will cause a small amount ofgas to exit the pilot. While still pressing the pilot knob click the peizo lighter button usually located on the opposite face side of the burner, or light a long match or BBQ lighter and hold up to the pilot. In order for your pilot to stay lit you will need to hold the pilot knob down for 3-5 seconds. This ensures that the flame has created enough millivolt charge to hold the valve open in order for your pilot to maintain itself.
Can I keep my pilot light on or do I have to turn it off when I’m not using it?
Yes it is safe to keep your pilot light running. It’s recommended for gas cost reasons to turn off after winter season.
Can I get a remote control installed with my burner and gas log set?
Yes, if your log set is a millivolt log set.
